KYLE ABRAHAM / A.I.M

Kyle Abraham began his dance training at the Civic Light Opera Academy and the Creative and Performing Arts High School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He continued his dance studies in New York, receiving a BFA from SUNY Purchase and an MFA from NYU Tisch School of the Arts

Kyle Abraham received a B.F.A. (2000) from the State University of New York at Purchase and an M.F.A. (2006) from New York University. His choreographic works have been performed by both his company A.I.M (founded in 2006), and others at such venues as Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, the Joyce Theatre, Harlem Stage, Danspace Project, On the Boards, the Kelly-Strahorn Theater (Pittsburgh), and REDCAT (Los Angeles), among many others.



Abraham’s work explores the relationship between identity and personal history. A.I.M performs in a hybrid of traditional and vernacular dance styles, rooted in hip-hop and urban dance as well as strong modern dance technique.



Abraham is a 2013 MacArthur Fellow, a 2018 Princess Grace Statue Award Recipient, 2017-18 Joyce Creative Residency Artist, 2016 Doris Duke Recipient and 2015 City Center Choreographer in Residence.



A.I.M came to NCCAkron in the summer of 2019 for a creative residency in support of Abraham's new work, An Untitled Love. NCCAkron partnered with Williams Tower, a senior living community in Akron, to bring residents to an event with the dancers. The Akron Community Foundation's Gay Community Endowment Fund supported a paid internship for an LGBTQ+ youth interested in arts administration to assist A.I.M and NCCAkron staff during the course of the residency.
