About the Event

On December 16, join Lionel Popkin (Los Angeles, CA), Hari Krishnan (Middletown, CT / Toronto, ON), Meena Murugesan (Los Angeles, CA), Parijat Desai (New York, NY), Pramila Vasudevan (St. Paul, MN), and Sujata Goel (Harrisburg, PA). These diasporic dance artists of South Asian descent will discuss shared and divergent artistic processes, experimentation, immigration, and the relationship of dance to national identity.

Lionel, Hari, Meena, Parijat, Pramila, and Sujata comprised the cohort of Dancing Lab: South Asian Experimental Dance Artists. This lab met virtually over the course of 2020 to create a support network among the artists and further conversations of how performance frames individual expression and cultural transmission within the South Asian community. This conversation will be an extension of their work within the Dancing Lab.

Dancing Conversations are free public events that locate dance among broader topics and offer an opportunity to demonstrate the aesthetic range within the dance field. All our 2021 Dancing Conversations — on dance & music, women & witchcraft, Black male choreographers, queer movements, and shifting cultural power — are available on our YouTube channel.
